I spent almost 20 years in Wall Street before starting a hybrid model social enterprise, so I am certainly comfortable with the ideas you post and the need for portfolio diversification and return on investment. But, there are very different trade offs in a social enterprise. If I give you too much return then for every extra $ you get, there is a $ less benefit to the social purpose. That makes debt a more attractive form of capital for hybrid models.

Also, many hybrid structures don’t have an exit strategy that works for the equity investor.

I would love to see greater experimentation from social investors in this area, and greater use of non-conventional structures. For example, what about debt with equity lined coupons, or caped return structures? Or how about donation contracts that call for the investor to donate their equity to the non profit part of the hybrid after realizing target returns?

John Berger
http://www.madebysurvivors.com/

The Power of Unreasonable People, written by John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan, also includes a good discussion of social business models, including numerous case studies. I reviewed the book on my blog (http://richesforgood.blogspot.com/).
